Great Martyr George the Victorious

George was born in the second half of the 3rd century in Cappadocia into a Christian family. Having settled down on military service In the Roman army, George, who stood out for his intelligence, courage and physical strength, became one of the high-ranking officers and the favorite of Emperor Diocletian. But during the beginning of the persecution of Christians (303-305), seeing their resigned torment at the hands of executioners for the name of the crucified Lord, George openly confessed the Creator of life, Christ, for which he was deprived by the tribunal of military ranks, wealthy property and the right to life. He suffered many bloody cruel tortures. George bravely endured all the torment and did not renounce Christ. After much persuasion from his former military friends to at least outwardly recognize the deity of the emperor, George went to Christ through cutting off his head.
One of the most famous posthumous miracles of St. George is the killing of a serpent (dragon) with a spear, which devastated the land of a pagan king in Beirut. As some literary monuments report, the population of that area suffered from the attacks of some monster, and when the lot fell to give the royal daughter to be torn to pieces by the monster, George appeared on horseback and pierced the snake with a spear, saving the princess from death. The appearance of the saint contributed to the conversion of local residents to Christianity.

The national holiday Terenty Marevny is celebrated on April 23 (April 10, old style) every year. In Orthodox church calendar This is the day of honoring the memory of the martyr Terentius Africanus (of Carthage), of Petria.

Other holiday names: Terentyev Day, Sunset Day, Day of Penitent Wives.

The name “Haze” is associated with the sun rising in the haze - an ancient sign by which ancestors judged the fertility of the next season.

Story

Saint Terence lived in the 3rd century in Africa. After the pagan emperor Decius issued a decree requiring sacrifices to idols, he and his squad refused to do so. The ruler of Africa, Fortunian, ordered Terentius and his three friends to be imprisoned. An attempt to force other prisoners to renounce Christianity was unsuccessful. When they were led to a pagan temple, and the ruler personally offered to bring gifts to the idols, the courageous martyrs called on God for help. At that very moment the idols began to stagger and the temple collapsed. Fortunian saw this, became angry and ordered everyone to be beheaded.

After this, the ruler gave the order to bring Terenty and his friends. He showed them the dead and for the last time suggested that they renounce the Christian faith. The martyrs once again refused. They were starved and snakes were released on them. The Lord sent an angel to them, who freed the martyrs from their shackles, quenched their hunger and protected them from reptiles. Fortunian realized that he had lost this battle and ordered the beheading of the martyrs.

Traditions and rituals

— According to popular belief, if the sun was surrounded by haze at sunrise on April 23, one could expect a good grain harvest that year. And if at sunrise the sky around the sun turned out to be clear, this did not promise anything pleasant. The peasants believed that in this case they would have to plow the land and sow grain again, because after the first planting nothing would sprout.

“By this time, warm weather was setting in, which turned the melting snow into a dirty, slurping mess. The spring roadlessness was in full swing, streams were flowing everywhere, the clay and soil were softening. For this reason, the day was called “restricted from traveling,” which means “it’s better not to go on a long journey.” People said: “The road to Terentiy is collapsing”; “There is dirt all around - you can’t drive through, you can’t walk through.”

— According to popular belief, on April 23, a wife who has sinned must repent. But this should not be taken as a universal remedy. Only the one who sincerely repents of her sin, wants to improve her relationship with her husband and restore peace in the family will be forgiven.

— This day was good for fortune telling and love magic. It was necessary to wash the floors in the house, wash clothes and water houseplants. This simple magic helped to attract smart and kind people to the house. Pink candles had to be lit in the bedroom.
