The Oldushka modeling agency does not have an office in the traditional sense, but it does have branches in St. Petersburg, Omsk and Chelyabinsk. The founder of Oldushka, photographer Igor Gavar, and I meet in a small coffee shop in Moscow, on Yauzsky Boulevard. To describe how Igor enters the room, the wording “ran in from the cold” is suitable - he really almost runs in, although in this case he is not late for anything: who knows, I was waiting for a lot of men?.. Gavar’s daily routine and a list of everything he needs you need to figure it out “right now”, of course, slightly reminiscent of the life of the heroes of the series How to make in America. Only they launched it together fashion brand in New York, and Igor runs an independent modeling agency by oneself. He admits that it would, of course, be nice to find a person who could be entrusted with the commercial part - but for now Gavar can cope on his own. At ease. Or involuntarily.

“Basically, models are put on clothes that they don’t wear in real life,” says Igor. “On the set, the characters live a life they have never lived, trying on an image in which they may not have even imagined themselves before. Sometimes it goes to extremes. We have this Lyudmila Brazhkina in the agency. We met in a supermarket in Maryino. I approached and said that she had a very interesting appearance and asked if she wanted to work with us. Lyudmila immediately agreed. Literally a week later she was “booked” for a shoot by “Afisha”, but her hair had to be tinted purple. I called and said: “So and so, the story is for a very good publication, but there is a nuance - they really ask you to dye your hair.” Answer: “No questions at all.” You will probably be surprised, but our models are really ready for experiments. In a way, it even breaks my own stereotype. I thought the situation would be the opposite. Many who have worked with us tell me that the advantage of older models is how calm and balanced they behave on set, regardless of the circumstances. They work, as they say, for fun.”

It is somewhat more difficult for Igor to find new faces than for scouts from standard agencies. “What a life I have come to! - Gavar laughs. - No, by God! This is a very specific audience. Not all Russian pensioners are on the Internet yet. So, Instagram is not a big help to me in my search now. I probably found half the models right on the street. The rest were recommended by friends, acquaintances, and photographers. And a very small part came to me themselves. I photographed one woman whom I want to scout for a blog in 1912 in Sokolniki. Then I didn’t have any thoughts about the agency at all, and I didn’t take her contact information. Didn't even ask my last name. Woman with very beautiful face: I spent about forty minutes persuading her to take a photo for a street style project. And she agreed only when her friend, whom I had already photographed, appeared somewhere nearby on the dance floor and said: “Larissa, don’t be afraid, everything is fine, he was photographing me: good boy". And I started looking for this Larisa Iosifovna through the “Wait for me” program. Seriously. I didn’t know how else I would be able to meet her - I made announcements on social networks, walked around the park with a photo. It’s useless! I suspected that " “Wait for me” might work in this case, and just recently they called from the program and Larisa Iosifovna’s son responded.”

Igor admits: the types of models he “scouts” are his personal, subjective choice. “There is no calculation in it,” Gavar assures. “First of all, these are the people whom I myself want to shoot, whom I want to see on the cover of the magazine.” Would he agree to work with the so-called “plus-size”? "If you come across large woman, which makes my eyes light up, then yes, of course. As for height, the agency’s most sought-after model is, in my opinion, five-foot-six. I saw some photos from their youth and pre-retirement period. What happens to them is some kind of cosmos, I cannot explain it. Time is an all-powerful thing; it can distort facial features beyond recognition. Disfigure. And for some, beauty, on the contrary, becomes more obvious over the years. Some people's facial features become sharper and seem more interesting. And so people - for example, this is what they say about our Tatyana Neklyudova - just begin to shine. I can’t explain how, why.”

Fresh vacancies for middle-aged women are almost always positions as a salesperson, laborer or cook. If the woman is over 50, then the proposals are completely ridiculous. Lyuba Naumenko

Former electrician, seamstress, teacher, 81 years old

At school I participated in the drama club, but I never thought about becoming a model. However, I have been acting for 10 years.

I have three adult children. I took care of my grandchildren while my children were studying. Then, when I had more time, I became interested in dancing again and performed in an ensemble. One day, on the dance floor in Hydropark, an assistant director approached me and asked if I wanted to act as an extra. This is how my career as an actress and model began.

I communicate politely with all crew members. It is important to me that others are polite too. When shooting, I'm always afraid of ruining the shot - I don't want additional takes to be made because of me. I worry about this all the time.

There are elderly people who are unpleasant to look at: they are unkempt and neglected. I try to keep myself in shape. I'm pleased to hear compliments. Filming makes me feel alive - this is the greatest pleasure.

Ira Voitovich

Master of Sports in swimming, 62 years old

I don’t get nervous before filming, but on the eve of a swimming competition I was always nervous. In sports you need to win, to be better than others. On the set everything is different - there are no rivals.

At 20 you have no wrinkles and a good figure. Being a model is more difficult at 60: you need to put in more effort to look good. I'm 62 years old, but some people think I look 45.

They used to say that the egg does not teach the chicken, but now everything has changed. Today's young people grew up in the computer age, they know more than us. In the modeling business, I work with young people all the time; I’m not ashamed to take something new from them.

I'm 62 years old, but some people think I look 45.

Professional models know how to stand in front of the camera correctly and how to smile beautifully. I do everything intuitively. Shooting for me is impromptu. I don't always like the outfits I wear, but there's no tragedy in that.

It is difficult to be a professional model in Ukraine. Good contracts are offered only abroad; I hardly get paid for filming. But I’m ready to act for free.

Victor Gostry

Woodcarver, dancer, choral singer, 74 years old

I am an extra actor and often act in television stories. I do this for free.

Once I participated in a TV show, the guest of the broadcast was an honored artist. She spoke such nonsense that I felt ashamed. Then I realized that I looked and sounded better than most professional actors.

Working as a fashion model is easier than working as an extra: you just stand there, you don’t even need to open your mouth. But I like to express my opinion, share my experience, so television is closer to me.

It seems to me that everyone loves acting. I would like to do this all the time.

I draw, dance, sing - I like it. Many people give up on themselves at sixty. They have two activities: eating and sleeping. For me, filming is an opportunity to show how to live.

Svetlana Chizhevskaya

Master of Sports in trampolining, 57 years old

I'm new to the modeling business - this is my second shoot.

I used to coach children, then I worked in gym. I had to quit my job to raise my granddaughter. Now I can't find a job. Sports clubs don’t care what experience you have; if you’re over forty-five, they’ll refuse you.

At the shoot I was given a jacket and a dress, but I would have liked to have more outfits. I want to please people who see my photos. During the shooting it was scary - it seemed that they were about to tell me: “You are not suitable for us.” But then I managed to relax. I didn't expect it to be so easy.

Sports clubs don’t care what experience you have; if you’re over forty-five, they’ll refuse you.

I like to be myself in front of the camera. I love natural beauty- without plastic surgery and botox. Why can only twenty-year-olds be models? There are a lot beautiful women over fifty.

Vasily Kolomiets

At one of the castings I was asked if I would agree to play the role of a dead man. I refused: I don’t want to go to the coffin.

Olga Babitskaya

Former teacher, educator, 60 years old

More than 10 years ago, I saw an advertisement in the newspaper that extras were needed for the “Court Cases” program. I showed up there a couple of times, met the actors, started going to other castings - and so it went. To date, I have participated in 61 filmings - in episodes of TV series and various shows.

I was impressed that there were people much older than me at the shoot, and at the same time they very boldly tried on the most different images. I was a little embarrassed that I was plump compared to other grandmother models, but there was still no embarrassment.

I was most scared when I found out that I would have to pose in a swimsuit. I even thought that maybe they had confused me with someone. But in the end, I didn’t have to shoot in a swimsuit.

I have no acting education. It’s not possible to act regularly: new faces are needed, and therefore sometimes a lot of time passes before they call again.

Natalia Zozulya

Retired TV director, 68 years old

I am a TV director by training. I recently finished my career and decided to somehow restructure my life. 68 is too young to be sitting on the couch.

I travel - several years ago my granddaughter and I traveled all over Europe; then I went to Sri Lanka because I was always interested in meditation practices. I shoot and edit films myself, which I post on my YouTube channel. I have occupied myself with the Internet: I have Instagram, telegram, several pages on Facebook, and recently my text about meditation was published on an American resource.

I decided to stand on the other side of the camera. It's a great feeling when you're a beauty in front of the lens, and not a general on the set. At the photo shoot I was not afraid of anyone, because in my past life I had teams of 200 people under my command.

When I was young, I dreamed of becoming an actress, but I became a director because it seemed more respectable. I like to be removed, to submit, to become transparent glass. Submitting to a creative and young person is a special pleasure.

It is difficult for people on the street to understand that they can and should try on other images. I put on a cap and immediately become a hooligan, put on a blouse and transform into a lady. The costume dictates behavior: how to stand, what pose to take.

I was delighted with the images that were offered to me during the shooting. This is incredibly energizing and even uplifting.

Working on camera forces you to keep yourself on your toes. When I know that I have a shoot coming up, I don’t allow myself to wear pajamas or a nightie. Work, and especially work on camera, is additional drainage for the brain and a cure for illness.

Making money on filming is a big word.

Alexander Zadorozhny

Handyman, musician, photographer, 59 years old

I'm a photographer by profession, so it's more common for me to stand on the other side of the lens. This winter I filmed a master class by the founder of the Kommersant newspaper, Andrei Vasiliev. He talked about how after sixty many people are just beginning to live a full life. Then I realized that I need to try as much as possible.

From a young age, I looked at my reflection in the mirror and saw the image of a “satisfied macho man.” At some point, I realized that he had exhausted himself: now I’m not afraid to be on camera, even in the image of Quasimodo, the main thing is to try new and unusual things.

I don’t shoot regularly and I don’t earn anything from it. Although if I were offered to make filming a source of my income, I would hardly refuse. Sometimes I am invited as a model to one of the Kyiv photography schools, and I always try to help them.

From a young age, I looked at my reflection in the mirror and saw the image of a “satisfied macho man.”

I liked how well-organized the work of the team was during the filming of “Lover of Life” - everyone was in their place. Everything was thought out to the smallest detail, even to the point that the models’ shoelaces were tied so that they didn’t have to bend over again.

Lana Lenskaya

Journalist, editor, traveler, hides her age

Last spring I came to the “Life Lover” club - my modeling career began there. Previously, I couldn’t even dream of being in the frame, changing images and attracting attention.

My first modeling job was for a clothing brand. Must Have, then there was a shoot for Helen Marlen. The shoot for Bird in Flight was already the fifth in my short modeling career.

I don't just hide my age.

I began to notice that from shooting to shooting I was getting a taste for it, and there was more and more interest and a desire to be as involved as possible. I wasn't embarrassed or embarrassed at all while working on this project, but now I'm kicking myself a little for not coming up with as many ideas for shots as I could have.

It’s not bad that you can earn a little money on each shoot, but money is not at all why I agree to participate in photo shoots.

I don't just hide my age. French women say: “I am as old as I look, and not a year more.” Women react painfully to aging, and especially to the fact that the number in the passport often does not coincide with how they feel about themselves. I know that I manage to look younger than my age, but I’m still used to saying: “I’m 60+, and how many numbers go beyond this mark is no longer so important.”

Photographers and stylists - about working with older models

Victoria Temnova, photographer

Once the thought came to me: “What if they think that I’m some kind of youngster, and they are older and in some ways more experienced than me.” But I perceived older models exactly the same as others on all my shoots. It was great for us to work together.

The biggest problem is the size. Our designers sew clothes in sizes XS and XXS, forgetting that the size range is much wider. But we still found the things we needed - the designers helped, we went to a second-hand store together. I was guided by the fact that I chose the most cool clothes, but at the same time it had to be suitable for specific people.

I had no experience working with older models before. But there were times when mothers of models came to my sites - they were forty, fifty, and even more. It’s boring to set some kind of age limit for yourself; I’m in favor of photographing people of all ages.

Our designers sew clothes in sizes XS and XXS, forgetting that the size range is much wider.

It seems to me that age models are not in demand because many people are afraid to experiment and because everyone is used to seeing things exclusively on young girls. Top designers sew certain sizes, and others repeat them; everyone is afraid to go beyond some familiar boundaries - and it turns out that they forget about age-appropriate models.

No one was shy, there were no whims. I gave the models certain tasks, we played out some scenes all the time, we all liked what was happening. It seemed as if I had been to some kind of theater, but I still managed to capture everything on camera.

In this shoot, it was not me who revealed them as models, but rather they revealed me as a photographer. My range has expanded incredibly, and now I have no fear before any photo shoot. And thanks to the guys from LBK Production for helping me a lot with the shooting.

Sofia Vozniak, photographer
